Visitors to Cornwall Landing and the new trail that runs from the riverfront up to through Storm King Mountain State Park will soon be able to learn about the area’s role in the modern environmental movement.
Friends of the Palisades Interstate Park Comission has just received a $5,000 grant from the Hudson River Valley Greenway to erect interpretive signs at the riverfront and along the trail that tell the story of the fight against Con Edison.
That effort to stop the construction by Con Edison of a huge hydro-electric plant on the side of Storm King Mountain in the 1960s is often cited as the beginning of the environmental protection movement because for the first time citizens fought for the right to know about and comment on projects that affected their communities. It also led to the formation of Scenic Hudson and resulted in the creation of the Storm King State Park and Donahue Memorial Park, which is owned by the village of Cornwall-on-Hudson.
