Jazz tunes created by a clever Cornwall musician may soon be heard around the world. Steve Kessler, whom many people in Cornwall will recognize if they have ever attended a school concert or play, is the middle school band director and he has long noticed how difficult it is to find good music for young performers.
Kessler, who also plays with the local rock ‘n roll band The Big Smoothies, rose to the challenge and put his composing and arranging skills to work. A few months ago he sent five of his original jazz band compositions to the publishing company, Walrus Music Publishing in Pismo Beach, California. Last week, the president of Walrus Publishing contacted Steve and told him that they wish to publish all of his original songs.
Next, Kessler plans to go into a friend’s recording studio in Woodstock to produce a recording of his music. The publishing company plans to use some sound bytes of Kessler’s music for their Fall 2007 catalog’
“This will be another fun project,” Kessler says, who plays the trombone along with other instruments. “I plan on having a saxophone player and trumpet friend of mine over-dub themselves as I play all the trombone parts and rhythm section parts. So in essence, the three of us will reproduce the sound of an 18-piece big band!”
Kessler says he doesn’t expect to get rich from this venture. He will receive a minimal royalty payment each time one of his pieces gets sold.
“I am just excited to be recognized for my writing and I am anxious to share my music with other schools and bands across the country,” Kessler says.
You can hear Kessler lead the Cornwall Central Middle School Jazz Combo at the School Budget Vote on May 15 at the middle school at 6 p.m. The jazz band will be part of the annual spring band and choral concert at the school on May 22.
