The village board heard an update from the Riverfront Revitalization Committee on Monday evening from its chair, John Wenz, who said that the committee was not contemplating changes at Donahue Park but has been focusing on the sizeable piece of land north of that, near the old coal pier.
“There is still misinformation that the committee has been established to commercialize Donahue Park,” Wenz said. “That is the furthest thing from our goal.”
Wenz described plans to get landscape architects and planners from Cornell University, who work on a voluntary basis, to assess the property in the area of the coal dock and look at the obstacles to gaining access to the parcel, which sits on the far side of the railroad tracks.
He also said that the committee would work with the Moodna Creek Watershed Coalition to study how to best preserve the wetlands in that area and would look into possible funding from Orange County and New York State.
“Our process is a long-term process,” Wenz told the board. “But we are willing to do it.”
Note: Frank Ostrander took this photo of the coal pier earlier this month.
