Cornwall-on-Hudson native General David Petraeus is being considered as the next NATO commander, according to a story today in The New York Times. Asked about the report, he told Cornwall-on-Hudson.com that he remains focused on his mission at hand in Iraq.
Petraeus, who grew up on Avenue A and graduated from Cornwall High School, then the United States Military Academy at West Point, has been serving as the chief military commander in Iraq since January 2007. Last September he faced a tough Congressional grilling about the troop surge in Iraq, a tactic he advocated as a way to stabilize that country.
If General Petraeus is sent to Brussels as NATO commander, it won’t be his first time there. He served as an assistant to NATO chief John Galvin in the 1980s.
NATO today is faced with both military and political challenges from the conflict in Afghanistan to relations with Russia. Petraeus, who holds a PhD in international relations and a master's in public administration as well as experience in the field, may be well-suited for the assignment.
Last month, Time magazine named General Petraeus one of four runners-up for its 2007 Person of the Year. That nod went to Russian president Vladimir Putin.

WOW! Regardless of our position on the war, Gen Petraeus, our hometown boy, is serving this country with honor and distinction. We owe him our gratitude.
