Another candidate wants to run for a seat on the village of Cornwall-on-Hudson board of trustees.
On Saturday, Rick Gioia, a 15-year resident of the village, started gathering names on a petition to be on the ballot in the March 18 election.
Gioia ran for trustee in 2007 and was defeated in a three-person race for two openings.
This year, Gioia has prepared a statement to hand out to voters as he solicits signatures. On it, he calls this election a “crucial” one, “We need balanced, forward-looking, and enlightened leadership to preserve and build on the things that make C-O-H such an amazing place to live,” he says in the statement.
Gioia lists several issues he says are central to the village election: debt, water, the village center, the waterfront and grant writing. In person, he cites the administration of the water department as his biggest concern, suggesting that the department could reduce its use of water from the Catskill aqueduct and save money. He also calls for protection of the well field on Taylor Road.
Gioia may face four other candidates in the election. Incumbent trustees Peter Miller and Charles (Rudy) Hahn have both signaled their intention to run. Barbara Gosda, a first-time candidate, and Bob Gilmore, the former superintendent of the Department of Public Works, have both picked up petitions.
Gioia says that he fully supports the candidacy of Gosda who serves with him on the Village Square Improvement Committee.
