General News: Summer Playground Funding in Question

Funding for the village of Cornwall-on-Hudson’s summer playground is on the line in the proposed budget for 2008-09.

More than 225 children attended the summer program last year and the cost of running the program has risen to $20,000.    Village mayor Joseph Gross says that is more than the village should have to pay.

“It’s a pretty big chunk of money for a village this size,”  Gross said on Tuesday, adding that some older people are resentful of the expense.  “The burden of school taxes is already dividing the community and this just increases that,” he noted.

Mayor Gross wants to find other ways to fund the summer playground, either with grant money or by raising the tuition for students.   The program had been offered as a free benefit to village residents until 2007, when a $25 fee was charged.   At Monday evening’s work session of the village board of trustees, Gross estimated that each child would have to pay approximately $100 to cover the cost of running the program if no grant money is found.

Playground program director Will Hall spoke to the trustees on Monday, explaining the importance of maintaining the standards required for a summer youth program, particularly the ratio of 1 counselor for every 12 children.   Hall says that it is his goal to keep the cost as low as possible while running the program as efficiently as possible.

Gross said he welcomes people in the community to help find a way to keep the program going.  “If people in the community want to maintain it, they should jump in and help us,”  he said.

A public hearing on the village’s proposed budget will be held on Tuesday, January 22, at 7:30 p.m. in the village hall.
