Don’t be late for the ball drop at the Storm King Theater on Hudson Street in Cornwall-on-Hudson this New Year’s Eve. If you delay, you may miss the show of the evening: the Elvis and Mick Jagger impersonator who will perform on the roof the building starting at 11:30 p.m.

Event organizer Elizabeth Yannone says that she this is one of the delights in store for revelers who will greet the new year together in the village square.

The second attraction is the newly built ball. The glittering globe, measuring approximately five feet wide and four feet tall, will descend from the roof to the sidewalk in front of the theater – a drop of 40 feet. Elizabeth’s father, Ray, Yannone, who owns the Storm King Theater, reports that some 1,500 bulbs light up the new orb, which was built from tubing covered with reflective foil. The numbers of the new year will be same as last year’s, only updated to welcome 2008.

Elizabeth’s brother, Ray, Jr., built the new ball and on Saturday, the Yannone family was outside the theater, cleaning the sidewalks, painting posts, and lifting the globe up to the roof. The team has also built a temporary platform above the marquee on the theater and installed lights along its base. That’s where Elvis and Mick will dance on New Year’s Eve.

This year’s ball drop is part of Yannone’s plan to breath new life into the theater building. A new restaurant is expected to open this winter where Nicky’s restaurant used to be and plans are in the works for the restoration of the theater.

The public is invited to this year’s ball drop -- as it has been since the first ball drop in 2001*. Elizabeth Yannone suggests that everyone dress warmly to watch the show and the final countdown.

* Nicky Correa, the former owner of the restaurant in the Storm King Theatre building, first dreamed up the idea of a ball drop and created the event with the help of local residents, including Chris Garti, who fabricated the illuminated numbers,

Ok, gob77, you live in the US, New Year's Eve is celebrated in a loud
and boisterous manner. Maybe if you had attended you would have been infected with some of the merriment. On the fourth of July are you going to p*$$ about the fireworks? and what about those blasted bag pipes, huh? (man, I LIVE for those!) The music ended at 12:30 for goodness' sake. My two cents say you are probably one of only two people who called the cops to complain about the birthday party on Hudson last fall when the rest of the neighborhood had no problem with it. On that evening the music ended at 9 pm. I would suggest you invest in a package of those little spongey ear plugs then you won't have to hear any of your neighbors, near or far.
