The Cornwall boys and girls varsity basketball teams won the Section 9 championships Sunday afternoon in close, but ultimately victorious, matches.
The girls team set the tone with the first game, defeating Red Hook 52-39. The Cornwall team led the scoring throughout the game, although Red Hook came within one or two points on two occasions.
Top scorer for Cornwall, with 14 points, was Christina Jordan, followed by Lexie Thayer with 11 points.
The boys varsity team took to the court at SUNY New Paltz, where the play-offs are being held, following the girls team.
From the first basket sunk by Ryan McMillan, the Dragons fought hard to stay ahead of the Red Hook players. At half-time, the score was 30-28, with Cornwall maintaining its small lead.
With 1:12 remaining in the third quarter, the two teams tied it up, 41-41. That’s when the Dragons dug in and took back the lead. The players from Red Hook were just as determined to get the lead back and the score remained tight until the last three minutes of the game.
The final score: Cornwall 67, Red Hook 60. Cornwall’s top scorers were the Bradley brothers. Peter Bradley led the team with 19 points and his brother, Kyle, a freshman, was close behind with 17 points. Kyle’s 3-pointer with two minutes left on the clock solidified Cornwall’s lead against Red Hook. Sean D’Auria and Brian McNally each netted 12 points.
The boys varsity game will be broadcast on Time Warner Channel 6 on Monday, March 5, at 8 p.m.
The next match-ups, against the winners of the Section 1 playoff, will be on Tuesday evening at SUNY New Paltz. The girls game against Lakeland gets underway at 5:00 p.m., followed by the boys game against Peekskill at 7:00 p.m.
