General News: Hospital Gala to be held at Donahue Park

St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital won approval Monday evening to hold its annual fundraising gala at the riverfront on September 6, 2008, with set-up beginning several days before.
The village board voted unanimously in favor of the request to use Donahue Memorial Park for the event,
Prior to the vote, Mayor Joseph Gross told the board that he wanted to minimize impact on the south end of the riverfront park and encouraged planners to focus their parking efforts in the north end.
Police chief Charles Williams said that his department will keep open access to the Cornwall Yacht Club. He also noted that when the hospital held its gala there in 2006, the boat ramp was closed the night before and the south end of the park was open until 3 p.m. on the day of the gala.
John Wenz, chair of the Waterfront Revitalization Committee said that the closing of the boat launch should not cause any significant inconvenience as ramps are available in Newburgh.
The village plans to charge the hospital $2,300 to cover the costs of police and public works services.

WHAT?? Use the Newburgh boat launch- REALLY? Could we not have asked the hospital to have the gala in October when the boating season is pretty much over? The tents have heaters for the gala goers comfort. Any one think of this option or doe the hospital come before the people who have paid for the use of the parking lot and access to the boat launch? Are we to expect the gala to be at the riverfront every other year now?
