General News: Hospital Requests Riverfront Gala Site
|
The hospital erected tents in the park in 2006 |
December 11, 2007
Sue Sullivan, the vice president of marketing and development at St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital, appeared before the Cornwall-on-Hudson board of trustees Monday evening to urge a swift response to the hospital's request to hold its annual fundraising gala in Donahue Memorial Park in September 2008. She described how the hospital benefits the community with its investment of millions of dollars of new technology and equipment to meet local health needs.
She told the board that the riverfront is a great location for the event and that the hospital had a positive working experience with the village when it held the gala there in 2003 and 2006.
Mayor Joseph Gross acknowledged that the riverfront is an attractive place for anyone to hold an event and said that the board has been working all year to come up with a group use policy.
Gross had a meeting with Sullivan in early November and he said he still is looking into the cost of village services that would be required to assist the hospital with access and traffic safety. In 2006, the hospital paid $1,500 for use of the park.
Sullivan said the impact on village services would be minimal, noting that the hospital provides 24-hour security at the site, nearly two dozen valets to assist with parking, and a dumpster for cleaning up afterwards. “The reaction has been that we left the site better than we found it,” Sullivan said.
She also responded to the mayor’s request to move the gala to the north end of the park, saying it is not flat and would require significant costs to cover with a floor. Village attorney Howard Protter noted the area south of the brook could still be open to the public.
In 2006, access to the boat launch was closed prior to the gala without notice to local residents.
A number of village residents spoke up on behalf of the hospital’s request. Peter Neuman noted that the hospital is a tremendous resource for the community, saying that in 2006, more than 11,000 Cornwall and Cornwall-on-Hudson residents used Cornwall hospital.
State senator Bill Larkin also recognized its importance and urged the board to make a timely decision. “We have a hospital here, we deserve the right to have our hospital operate here and to have its fundraiser here,” Larkin told the board.
Village trustees Rudy Hahn, William Fogarty and Mark Edsall all said they were willing to support the hospital’s request. Action on the matter is expected at next Monday’s board meeting.
