Traffic congestion spurred change |

If you’re planning to go to the village post office or Cornwall-on-Hudson Elementary School, make sure you check the parking rule sign before you leave your car. On Monday evening, the village board approved a new law that changes the parking regulations for Maple Avenue Extension, which runs along the side of the school’s front lawn.
The new law makes the right side of the roadway a no stopping, no standing, and no parking zone from 8:15 to 9:00 on weekday mornings and from 3:00 to 3:45 p.m. on weekday afternoons, unless picking up or dropping off students. At other times of day vehicles will be allowed to park for up to 30 minutes.
The changes were made following an effort by parents of elementary school students concerned about the safety hazard created by cars that parked in the area at drop-off and pick-up times. Last November they sent a letter to Mayor Moulton and the board of trustees, along with a petition signed by 38 people, asking for the changes.
Lisa Silverstone, a mother of two who spearheaded the campaign to change the rules, says that she's happy that the village government and police responded to their actions. "Closing the Maple Ave. extension during school drop-off time and will result in a much safer situation for our children and far less conjestion on Hudson Street during this busy time of day," she said.
