The middle school band led an enthusiastic crowd of carol singers and toe-tapping observers who gathered Sunday evening for the annual lighting of the Christmas tree in Chadeayne Circle in Cornwall.
Bob DeWit, the president of the Cornwall Chamber of Commerce, which sponsors the holiday event and decorates the center of town, welcomed people to the Highland Engine Fire station across from the circle.
The band members, many dressed in Santa hats and reindeer ears, played a dozen holiday tunes under the direction of bandleader Steve Kessler.
As a cold rain began to fall, Tom Quinlan, a member of the Chamber, introduced this year’s official tree lighters, the Manion family, who turned on the tree to great applause. Vincent Manion was chosen for the honor in recognition of the two tours of duty he did in Iraq as a member of the Army reserve. He was joined by his wife, Brenda, and four children, Tara, Ryan, Dylan and Gavin.
The doors of the fire station then opened for people to come in and enjoy hot drinks and, most importantly, to say hello to Santa Claus.
