December 06, 2007
A vehicle allegedly stolen from the parking lot of Brookside Condominiums in Cornwall struck a New Windsor police cruiser on Route 9W Tuesday night, resulting in the injury of both the police officer and the driver of the vehicle.
Cornwall police chief Todd Hazard said that the vehicle had been reported missing at 3 p.m. on Tuesday and that Officer Pena, of the Cornwall-on-Hudson police department, spotted it on Route 9W around 11:30 p.m.
Cornwall police notified their counterparts in New Windsor, who saw the vehicle speeding through a red light at Union Avenue and Route 9W. New Windsor police said that one of their officers, Michael Massopust, stopped his cruiser in the median with its lights on. At that point, police said, the speeding vehicle struck Massopust’s cruiser, extensively damaging both cars.
Both the office and the driver were taken to the hospital where they were treated and released.
The driver of the vehicle, Paul Miller, 19, of Cornwall-on-Hudson, was charged with reckless endangerment in the first degree, criminal possession of stolen property in the fourth degree, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle in the third degree and driving while impaired. Miller was sent to Orange County jail with bail set at $5,000.
