Local officials introduced the new speed trailer |
December 04, 2007
Cornwall police have a new speed trailer that will help enforce speed limits throughout the town. In the past, police had to rely on equipment on loan from other police departments.
The new trailer shows the speed of passing vehicles and it also keeps a detailed record of the time, speed, and number of vehicles that pass the trailer.
Cornwall police chief Todd Hazard says this information will allow his department to pinpoint when and where speed enforcement is needed “It really tells a story,” said Cornwall supervisor Richard Randazzo, referring to all the data captured by the computer inside the trailer.
The $8,000 trailer was purchased with part of a $30,000 grant to the Cornwall police department from the office of State Senator William Larkin. Larkin, whose name is on a metal plate affixed to the trailer, was on hand Tuesday afternoon at town hall and called the device a “valuable tool” for the department. “It’s a great reminder,” Larkin said, “that I better slow down.”
Supervisor Randazzo said that he probably gets most complaints about speeding drivers from residents of Willow and Mailler Avenues and they will likely be the first places where the new speed trailer is put to work.
