The pure excitement of the holiday season shone through the eyes of young children Sunday evening as they sang Christmas carols at the bandstand, which was covered in newly-fallen snow.
They had come for the tree lighting at 5 p.m. but unlike earlier years, there was no band from NYMA to strike up a tune. So village historian Collette Fulton, who also serves on the bandstand committee, pulled together a choir of young children, who sang their favorite holiday songs.
From Jingle Bells to Santa Claus is Coming to Town, the sweet young voices brought a new flavor to the traditional event. As the crowd listened, stamping their feet against the cold night air, the children counted down for the tree lighting, few noticing that the tree did not fully light up on the first try. The children were far more interested in a fire truck that made its way down Hudson Street, with Santa Claus on board.
Within minutes, the crowded had dispersed, with the children streaming across the street for hot chocolate, cookies, and a chance to meet Saint Nick.
On Tuesday, December 4, at sunset, other celebrants will mark the first night of Hannukah with the lighting of the menorah next to the village bandstand.
