The town of Cornwall has a new police chief, Todd Hazard, who has been serving as a sergeant in the New Windsor police force. At a special town meeting Thursday evening, Supervisor Richard Randazzo introduced a motion to appoint Hazard. It was unanimously approved.
With a smile on his face, obviously pleased to have ended a sometimes controversial search for a new chief, Randazzo handed the police chief badge to Hazard even before his swearing-in ceremony, which will take place early next month.
Hazard, 39, will replace former town police chief Rusty O’Dell, who resigned abruptly in December. Cornwall police sergeant Philip Sinagra has been filling in as chief since then and Randazzo thanked him tonight for his service during the transition.
No one from the public spoke at the meeting and Randazzo noted that many people had already made their voices heard. Earlier this month, the town had offered the position to a police officer from Chester, then rescinded it following some public criticism of the process.
Chief Hazard, whose appointment becomes official on March 5th, is a native of Wallkill who has served in the New Windsor police department for 19 years. Three uniformed officers from that department came out to witness his appointment to the new post.
Hazard lives in Cornwall with his wife, Debra, and three children, who attend Willow Avenue Elementary School. Debra Hazard is happy with her husband’s appointment and expects to see more of him as Cornwall police chief because he previously worked two jobs.
