General News: No Action on Cold War Vets Exemption
November 20, 2007
The village of Cornwall-on-Hudson trustees do not want to grant property tax exemptions for Cold War veterans at this time. That was the consensus of the board when it discussed a new state law that enables local municipalities to provide 10- to 15-percent exemptions to military personnel who served between September 2, 1945 and December 26, 1991.
Trustee William Fogarty, a Cold War veteran himself, responded quickly to the proposed exemption, noting that the village can’t pay its bills now and couldn’t afford to lose property tax income.
Trustee Rudy Hahn said that something should be done for the Cold War vets but he agreed with trustee Mark Edsall that if the village cuts the tax rate for one group of individuals then it will have to raise the rates for others to compensate for the loss.
“We should understand the implications before moving ahead,” Edsall said.
