An effort to protect the look of a stone bridge on Mountain Road unfolded at Monday evening’s meeting of the village of trustees.

David Halvorsen, the acting head of the village department of public works, announced that repair work would begin on Monday, November 26, on the bridge, which was damaged during a storm. FEMA is paying for the repair work and Halvorsen noted that “it is not costing the village a penny.”

Rick Gioia, who lives near the bridge, requested that the DPW “take care of this little bridge that no one seems to notice” and asked if its stonework could be preserved.

Halvorsen explained that the planned repairs called for replacing the stone arch bridge with three PVC pipes that would be about ten feet wide. He said that the village did not have funds for stonework and that the repairs, which had been put off since the summer, were desperately needed.

Mayor Joseph Gross noted that the state Department of Transportation had done a very good job restoring the stone bridges on Route 218 and Dock Hill Road and he would like the village to preserve the stone bridge on Mountain Road as much as is practical.

Gross also recalled that earlier work on bridges crossing that stream on Boulevard had resulted in metal guardrails replacing the traditional stone that gives the village its character. Rick Gioia suggested that if rebuilding a stone bridge was cost prohibitive, that perhaps the stones could be used cosmetically to retain the visual effect of a stone arch bridge.

Comments:

The Stone bridge that is currently being replaced by the NYS on Rt. 218 is beautiful. They are doing a great job for the village...stop to see it!
