General News: Carols for Cornwall Soldiers
|
Valerie Ransbottom |
November 13, 2007
The old, the young and those in between --- all members of the Cornwall community are invited to participate in a group photo this Saturday, November 17, at the football field behind the middle school. Then, everyone is welcome to a CD of music from “A Christmas Carol” that will be sent with the photos to friends and relatives serving in the armed forces.
Valerie Ransbottom, a music and choral teacher at the middle school, came up with the idea for Songs for Cornwall Soldiers and Brian Florio, of the Stormy Weather Players thought up adding the photo to go along with songs. (The Stormy Weather Players will be performing “A Christmas Carol” next month.)
Ransbottom’s husband Scott is serving with the military in Kuwait. Scott is well-known in the Cornwall community, a frequent volunteer at school events when he is home and an energetic aide to his tireless wife. Valerie says she is always trying to think of things to send over to him and other members of his unit.
Ransbottom asks that people dress to stand out in the photo, which will be taken at 11 a.m., rain or shine, from the bucket of a lift truck. “We envision firefighters, police officers, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, veterans in their uniforms, sports teams, cheerleaders, and other civic organizations, or simply individuals,” she writes in a flyer being distributed around town.
Afterward, the action moves to the Bethlehem Presbyterian Church, on Route 94 and Jackson Avenue, from 1 to 4 p.m. Sound recordist Frank Ostrander has volunteered his services to record the tunes.
If you are interested in helping to send some Cornwall hometown cheer to our troops, please contact Brian Floria via email.
Families who’d like their loved one in the military to receive a copy of the CD should write to [email protected] with the following information: requestor’s name, address and phone number, the name, rank and address of the service member; how long they’ve been in service, where they are stationed, and where they lived in Cornwall, graduation year from CCHS, or other Cornwall-related information.
If your business would like to contribute money toward the printing of photos, programs CD’s, or postage please contact Brian at: [email protected]
Comments:
Remember, you can support our men and women overseas, even if you don't support the war. These guys are 1/4-way around the world, in constant life-threatening situations. The LEAST we can do is to show them our support. I know I'll be there for the picture and the carolling.
