Cornwall’s boys and girls varsity cross country teams both came in fourth in Saturday’s state meet in upstate New York. The first Cornwall boy runner to cross the finish line was Ian Clerkin, who placed seventh, followed 28 seconds later by Colin Anderson. Thie first girl to place was Lauren Scholl.

Before the race, we spoke to Colin Anderson, a senior who won the Orange County championship on October 25 at Bear Mountain and who has the second-best record of any Cornwall varsity runner ever. He earned this title despite debilitating injuries that sidelined him for the spring season this year.

Colin, who lives in the village with his parents Bob and Lauren Anderson, said he got the running bug at age 11 when he participated in his first race, a benefit for the Storm King Fire Engine Company. He was just meters from the finish line and quickly gaining ground on Ken Schmidt, the tall, lanky principal of Cornwall-on-Hudson Elementary School, when he threw up and lost his pace.

Despite the outcome, Colin joined the middle school cross country team the next year, and he has been competing ever since.

When Colin talks about running, it is clear that working with his fellow team members is his favorite part. “I wouldn’t want to live without the team,” he said, “after meets and practices we always get together.”

Close behind that experience is the thrill he gets on a morning solo run, when he often covers 18 or 19 miles through Cornwall and through trails in Black Rock Forest. “My favorite run is from my house up to Eagle Cliff, where you can see the New York City skyline,” Anderson said. “After running, I have the greatest day ever.”

When Colin was unable to run due to injuries this spring, he realized just how important running was to his life. Throughout the spring, he would try to run and couldn’t because the pain was overwhelming, driving him to tears.

With the help of a chiropractor in Newburgh, whom he credits with getting him back on the track and keeping him in shape today, Colin was able to make a comeback and win the Orange County Championship. “I realized how much I missed running,” Colin said, “when I got back into it, it was a great feeling.

In addition to the daily runs, Colin keeps in shape with a healthy diet, lots of salads, and beef. One of his favorite breakfasts, he said, is apple pie and sausages.

He plans to compete next spring with the track team but Anderson said he didn’t plan to go to college to pursue athletics. He intends to follow his father’s footsteps and become a marine transport specialist.

With a level head, Anderson is likely to apply the lessons of long distance running to life: don’t go into a course to hard, keep a quick and steady pace, and in the final moments, give it your best shot.
