Up at Storm King School in Cornwall-on-Hudson, the story of Huckleberry Finn will take center stage in a Canterbury Theatre Ensemble production that runs for six performances beginning this weekend.
The Tony Awarding-winning musical “Big River: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” will transport viewers to another era with its heartfelt tale of Huck, who flees an abusive home to find freedom and friendship with an escaped slave, Jim.
On the river, freedom proves elusive as two small-time thieves try to lure Huck to join their evil ways. When a beautiful woman leads Huck to change course, he discovers it may be too late for his new friend, Jim, who has been sold back into slavery. With help from his old buddy Tom Sawyer, Huck manages to right that wrong and discovers that his adventures had brought him “considerable trouble and considerable joy.”
The rousing ballads and country tunes are performed with toe-tapping gusto by the cast, which includes Storm King School students along with adults. Country music giant Roger Miller wrote the music and features bluegrass and country airs.
Find out why "Big River" thrilled audiences on Broadway for more than 1,000 shows. Check out this rousing production by director Harold Heno, opening November 9.
