General News: Village Grievance Committee Gets New Member
November 07, 2007
The village of Cornwall-on-Hudson has appointed Susan Ostrander to its Grievance Committee that will hear property owners who are challenging the assessment of their homes and properties.
Ostrander joins Bill Fulton, Brigid Flynn, and Mayor Joe Gross on the committee. Gross, who as mayor also serves as the village tax assessor, says he is actively seeking another person to join the committee, which will hold a hearing on November 20.
The village tax rolls were released earlier this week and are on view at the village hall during business hours. The rolls are based on assessments compiled by the town of Cornwall tax assessor.
Recent changes in the assessments of numerous properties in the town and village have prompted criticism of the assessor’s methods, although the town board recently reappointed the assessor to a new six-year term.
After Monday’s special meeting where Ostrander was appointed, Mayor Gross was asked if he would change the village’s tax assessment system. He said that if people in the village “think the town system is out of whack, we have to press for a resolution.”
