Before you drive off in your vehicle, you’d better check to make sure that seatbelts are fastened, warns Cornwall police chief Todd Hazard. Hazard says that the town has received a $12,000 grant to put extra patrols on the street starting the week of November 12 through Thanksgiving. Their main focus will be seatbelt enforcement – and handing out tickets when the belts are not in use.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that 31,415 people died in crashes in 2005 across the U.S. and more than half, 16,172, were not wearing seat belts.
Of particular concern is the number of fatalities in pickup trucks where seat belts are not used. Law enforcement warns that young drivers and passengers in pickup trucks are wrong to think that the vehicle’s size and weight will protect them in a crash.
Comments:
Maybe the police departments could get a grant for some sensitivity training so they can learn how to build relationships of trust and respect with the youth of our town.:-p
