General News: Cornwall Varsity Teams Triumph

Cornwall varsity teams have won six Section 9 titles since Friday, sending the teams into regional competitions in the week ahead and individual athletes into the state finals in swimming and cross country.

On Sunday afternoon, the girls volleyball team defeated Monticello by a score of 3-0. The team advances to play the champion Section 4 team at 5:15 p.m. on Tuesday, November 6, at SUNY New Paltz.

Saturday, the boys varsity soccer team won the title in a surprise defeat of defending champion Goshen, blanking that team 2-0. Danny Shanker provided a goal and an assist while Steve Westerduin made the second goal with an assist from Joe LaGrutta


Friday evening two Cornwall teams won their Section 9 titles. The varsity football team trounced Wallkill with a score on 34-0 to grab the Class A crown. The football regional tournament continues on Friday, November 9th with Cornwall returning to Dietz Stadium in Kingston at 7:30 p.m. to play the winner of the Ossining and Fox Lane game.

The girls varsity soccer team also defeated its rivals from Wallkill, 5-1. In that game, Steph Strine, Kaitlyn Sharo, AnnMarie Rizzi, Laura Basilico, and Kim Sharo scored goals with assists by Ashley Thorpe, Tara Mancini, Kaitlyn Sharo, and Rizzi.

Cornwall controlled the play throughout the entire game led by the play of midfielders Mancini and Rizzi. Carina Luck was in goal and recorded two saves as the dominating defense held Wallkill to just 3 shots on goal.The defense was led by Jillian Moretto, Ashley Thorpe, Jillian Kelly, Ashley Rodriguez, and Kelly Whalen.

The boys and girls cross country teams also won their sectionals at a meet on Friday at Bear Mountain State park.

In Cornwall swimming, the girls 200 medley relay team of Brie Ryan, Carly Marshall, Rebecca Masionet and Allison Cleary for qualifying for the New York State swim meet. Brie Ryan has also qualified for the States to be held in Long Island on November 16th.
