General News: Plant a Tree on the Moodna

Celebrate trees on Sunday.
Celebrate trees on Sunday.
October 29, 2007

Tree-planting is one way to improve the quality of the Moodna Creek watershed, an important tributary of the Hudson River, and this Saturday volunteers are needed from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. to help plant some saplings.  The trees will enhance the buffer area along the Creek to help protect it from runoff and erosion and to improve wildlife habitat.

The tree planting initiative is sponsored by the Orange County Water Authority, with funds from the Hudson River Estuary Program.   Simon Gruber, a consultant to the county water authority, says that the trees are small and holes will already be dug.

Gruber says the volunteers "will be planting very young trees & shrubs (they're essentially sticks) into pre-dug holes and then covering them with protective mats and tubes to prevent deer browsing and weed  growth.  This manual labor is fairly light and is appropriate for children, too. "

Anyone who signs up for the work before Saturday will be entitled to a free lunch provided by the Estuary Program.  To RSVP, email Simon Gruber at [email protected] or call 534-5622.

Volunteers will meet at the parking area just west of the Moodna Viaduct railroad trestle on Otterkill Road in Cornwall, near the trailhead for Schunnemunk Mountain State Park.  This event will be held rain or shine and people should dress for the weather and bring work gloves.  Stop by and help for as much or as little time as you can give, Gruber says.
