At Monday evening’s business meeting, the school board members received some recognition for their work and they also set the agenda for issues to be discussed in the month ahead.

This week marks School Board Appreciation Week and Cornwall schools superintendent Timothy Rehm handed out small umbrellas to each board member, gifts from the district in recognition of their volunteer work. They also shared a cake during a break in the meeting. Earlier, the high school acapella group Treble in Paradise opened the meeting with "The Star Spangled Banner." (See them perform earlier this year in a My Space video.)

Superintendent Rehm noted that the school board is a “thankless position” saying he couldn’t thank the members enough for the time they put into it. “Regardless of other things you hear or read,” he said, “they do a great job.”

Board member Barbara Manzari will be representing Cornwall at the annual convention of the New York State School Boards Association later this week.

The school board adopted its goals for 2007/2008 and board president Brendan Coyne noted that one of their goals is to have more efficient meetings so that issues could be discussed in more detail, like the online course presentation Monday evening.

Coyne also acknowledged that the board had made a mistake when it discussed these goals at a private retreat during the summer rather than in an open meeting and said the board would look into all the rules about what can be discussed in closed meetings.

Coyne later said that at the board's next work session on November 19 that they would be discussing facility usage, the parameters of next year’s budget, as well as an expected report from the district on the cost of expanding to full-day kindergarten.
