General News: Mural Created with Artist

Adding final touches to a face
Students at work on the mural
Students at work on the mural
October 18, 2007

By Gina Dianis

Fifth and sixth grade students in my art class at the Cornwall Middle School had the unique opportunity to participate in the production of a large mural orchestrated by working artist Nestor Madalengoitia. Three of his professional murals can be viewed in downtown Poughkeepsie. Nestor is also known for his workshops with students in schools around the mid-Hudson area. This special project was sponsored by the Cornwall Middle School PTO.

Nestor worked with groups of five students who rotated out of art class for six days. Art students contributed to the entire art process in the overall theme which is connected to the guidance department’s “Character Education” curriculum. The mural is 8’ by 16’ and will go on permanent display in the new cafeteria.

Art students reinforced their knowledge of contour line, enlargement, proportion and color, further connecting the experience with math and science concepts. Students discussed layout and worked together to incorporate their ideas. Nestor also demonstrated how to mix colors and use art techniques to create the illusion of texture.

The first groups began by drawing out the composition, essentially the framework of the mural. The following groups filled the areas with colors and added shadows to support forms throughout the image. Art students left their sessions with great enthusiasm and exciting energy.

The overall goal of this experience was for all students to look at a piece of art work and read a visual story. Such is the experience one achieves when visiting a museum. In this case, the visual story supports ideas such as friendship, respectfulness, caring, considerate communication and tolerance.

Beginning November 9, the mural will be on permanent display in the new cafeteria, where it will reach all students whose encounter with the large mural will lead to personal interpretation and pride throughout our school community.

Here is what some of the art students are saying about creating the mural:

“I really enjoyed working on the mural. I learned a lot about lights and darks and how to make interesting colors.” Claire , 6th grade

“Working on the mural showed me how to draw shadows and what working together can do.” Dan, 5th grade

“My favorite part of working on the mural is when we painted the people. It looked very nice.” Alex, 5th grade

“Working with the artist was a great experience because he showed us how to blend colors.” Sarah,  6th grade
