Red Scarves for Parentless Teens |
January 31, 2007
This Valentine’s Day, dozens of parentless teens who are attending college will open care packages to find among the goodies a red scarf hand-made by volunteers organized by Maureen Basher of the Cornwall Yarn Shop. For many of these orphans who are making the transition from foster care to adulthood, it may be the first hand-made gift they have ever received.
Maureen Basher undertook this effort to collect over 65 of the hand-knitted and crocheted scarves because she understands first-hand the challenges that face adolescents and young adults. A former high school teacher, wife, and mother of three very active boy, Basher received contributions to the Red Scarf Project from all over Orange County as well as New Jersey. The “Chain Gang” of Newburgh and the knitting group at the Desmond Fish Library in Garrison deserve a special thank, she says.
Maureen, who is the owner of MoNotes Invitations and a crochet teacher at the Cornwall Yarn Shop, sent the scarves to the Orphan Foundation of America, which expected to receive thousands of scarves from across the United States.
The Cornwall Yarn Shop organizes various charity donations throughout the year, including ongoing projects with St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital. For more information about shop events go to www.cornwallyarnshop.com. For more information about the Orphan Foundation of America, go to www.orphan.org.
