General News: Snow Days

January 30, 2007

Children around the Cornwall School District may be practicing an unusual ritual tonight. When they get ready for bed you may find their pajamas are worn inside out. Some carry ice cubes, some walk in a circle, some light a match (if allowed). But they all are targeting the forces of nature to try to make it snow. And not just a powdering, but enough to cancel school or at least get a two-hour delay.

It is now the end of January and students have not been able to enjoy the spontaneous freedom granted by a sudden snow day. The luxury of waking early only to find they can roll over and sleep in, then rise to take their sleds outside to race down a hill.

The misery of a no-snow-day school year may intensify if they learn that if they won't get extra days off to compensate.

School superintendent Timothy Rehm clarified the district policy at the school board meeting yesterday. The Cornwall district's contract with teachers calls for no more than 187 days of work per school year.   If there are no snow days, the teachers will still work the full 187-day calendar.

Other districts have fewer days of work and so they may be required to close school later if there are no snow days.

"We are not out of the woods yet," Rehm said in reference to snow days, "knowing how February and March are in the Hudson Valley."

Kids, there is still hope.
