Parking causes safety concerns, mothers say |

At the village board meeting this week, the mayor introduced a new law changing the parking rules on Maple Avenue extension, just in front of the elementary school.
If approved at the next board session in February, the law will make the right side of the roadway a no stopping, no standing, and no parking zone from 8:15 to 9:00 on weekday mornings and from 3:00 to 3:45 p.m. on weekday afternoons, unless picking up or dropping off students. At other times of day vehicles will be allowed to park for up to 30 minutes.
Police chief Charles Williams says that the new rules were worked out in a meeting he and trustee Mark Edsall had with school superintendant Timothy Rehm and elementary school principal Kenneth Schmidt.
The new law was proposed in response to complaints from parents at the elementary school who sent a petition to the board in November asking for a change in parking rules. Lisa Silverstone, a mother of two, told the trustees that when cars are parked along the fence at drop-off time, children are forced to get out of their cars in the middle of the roadway, creating an unsafe condition.
Chief Williams also said that the group that met is also considering adding a sidewalk along the fence separating the school lawn from Maple Avenue extension to enhance the safety of students.
