General News: United Cornwall Soccer Scores

October 16, 2007

Week 5 Results

U9 GIRLS
Cornwall United’s U9 girls tied 3-3 on Sunday.  After a slow start that allowed Yorktown to score two goals in the first few minutes, the Scorpions got focused and evened the score with two goals of their own -- one by Olivia Davet and the other by Sydney Jurgens.

Yorktown went ahead again halfway through the second half.  Then, with 45 seconds left in the game, Yorktown was penalized with a handball.  Sam Incognoli launched it to the upper left corner, and the ball was tipped in by Taylor Filippone to bring the game to a final 3-3 result.

U10 GIRLS
The U10 Cheetahs extended their unbeaten streak in the EHYSL with a resounding 7 – 0 win over the LaGrange Tigers. The Cheetahs are now 4–0–1 in league play and 11–2–1 overall.

Micah Wojehowski and Sam Nelbach held the Tigers scoreless with outstanding goal tending. Lilian Poling (3), Jillian Decker, Lauren Pinkham, Giovanna Fichera and Nelbach scored the goals for the high-powered Cheetahs. Jillian Larson, Jessica Dwyer, Maddie Lander and Ava Carter played aggressively on offense keeping the action on the Tigers end of the field. Katarina VanLedtje, Leanne Casey and Emma Sabini
controlled the defensive end of the field limiting the Tigers to very few shots on goal.

U12 GIRLS-DRAGONCLAWS
The GU12 Dragon Claws played a fierce game against the seasoned Florida Spartans this past Sunday.  The game remained low scoring throughout the first half, but the Spartans prevailed 3-0 in the second half.

The Dragon Claws defense was marshaled by the relentless Ileana La Grutta who showed amazing tenacity.  Co-captain and keeper Rebecca Baumel had an impressive 19 saves in goal, including a punishing penalty kick. Solid play by Amanda Sarchino at midfield helped in the effort.  Judy Dianis played with grit and determination.  Krissy McGonnigle, recently sidelined with an injury, returned to the lineup and made valuable contributions.  Kelsey Fosstveit showed off her foot skills, beating her mark frequently.

U14 GIRLS
U14 girls shutout the Red Hook Wildfire by a score of 3-0. The Sabres came out strong and never stopped.

Carly Tices’ goal off of an excellent cross-field pass from Alejandara Cordero gave the team their first goal. Andréa Mancuso scored off a free kick and extended the score to 2-0.  Carly Tice capped the scoring with a coast-to-coast carry and shot that finished the scoring for the afternoon.

Much credit should go to the girls on defense who have allowed only three goals in the teams last ten games. Amanda Fasano, Kaitlyn Raynor, Kristen Condosta, Evelyn Cohen, Victoria Dewsnap and Kayla Brewer have eliminated all legitimate scoring opportunities for the opponents. The Sabres improved their unbeaten record to 3-0-2.

U10 BOYS
The U10 Rovers put on a tremendous show defeating the Washingtonville Blue Dragons by a score of 3 to 1.

Aiden O’Keefe led off the scoring for the Rovers, converting a penalty kick in the opening minutes of the game.  Aleks Rosenbaum scored the second goal with a low hard shot off a cross from Kieran McVan.  Salatiel Carino scored the third Cornwall goal on a penalty kick after Aleks Rosenbaum was taken down in the penalty area on a break away.

David Schuyler recorded a shut out in the goal in the first half and Aiden O’Keefe finished in the goal for the Rovers in the second half.  The defense was led by another solid performance by Raffaela Aversa as well as Michael McGlaughlin and David Brubacker.

U13 BOYS
The Cobras remained undefeated with a 1-1 draw against New Paltz.  After falling behind 1-0, the Cobras scored to knot it mid-way through the second half.

Joe Valle took off on a thrilling end-to-end run only to have the ball knocked away at the last minute, but as he seems to do every week, Danny Lopez dug it out and played it back to set up Joe for a beautiful left-footed goal.  A special Cobra tip of the cap goes to Jordan Goldenberg who showed excellent touch and field vision on a very windy day.
