A New Year’s Eve tradition in the village of Cornwall-on-Hudson will continue if Beth Yannone has her way.
On Monday evening, she told the village board that she had formed a committee to organize this year’s ball drop on the roof of the Storm King Theatre and make it even better than in past years.
Nicky Correa, the former owner of the restaurant in the Storm King Theatre building, dreamed up the idea of a ball drop several years ago and, with the help of local residents, including Chris Garti who fabricated the illuminated numbers, started what has become a popular New Year’s Eve pastime. When Nicky closed his restaurant suddenly last month, the future of the ball drop was cast in doubt.
Beth Yannone, whose father Ray owns the building, said that this year they have plans for an even longer ball drop using a larger hydraulic lift. In addition, they would like to serve hot chocolate, sparkling cider, and desserts from a concession stand. Music provided by a DJ and, possibly, fireworks, would top off the night.
Yannone said that she is pursuing this project as a private citizen but the board greeted the idea enthusiastically.
On a related topic, in a letter to the board, Andrew Doehla and Alexis Raccasi said they estimate the opening of their new restaurant at the site of Nicky’s restaurant on January 1, 2008.
