General News: Will Toys End Town's Geese Problem?
October 02, 2007
The Cornwall town board has not given up on looking for a way to move the flocks of geese that reside at Rings Pond. At the Monday night’s work session, board member Randy Clark suggested the town use large remote-controlled toys to drive the birds away.
Clark told his fellow board members that the towns of Monroe and Woodbury began using a remote-controlled ATV and a boat after efforts to chase the birds away with a border collie failed.
“The ATV runs them into the water,” Clark said, “and the boat runs them out.” He said every time a flock of geese landed, the Woodbury animal control officer would run out and scoot them along with the motorized toys. He noted that it took about a year and a half of operating the toys before the geese got the message to move on.
This summer town board member Mary Beth Greene Krafft met with a team from the U.S. Department of Agriculture that concluded that it would be difficult to use any of the techniques it normally employs to get rid of geese. (Read article here.)
The town board agreed to study Clark’s proposal further and supervisor Dick Randazzo asked the town's attorney to look into any restrictions on the treatment of the federally-protected geese.
The remote-control toys cost about $250 each. The cost of boarding and feeding a border collie runs about $3,500-4,000 a year, Clark said.
