A group of some two dozen people held a peace rally in the village center Thursday evening to protest President Bush’s plan to send 2,500 additional troops to Iraq. The president announced his plan in a televised address on Wednesday night.
Carol Durkin organized the event, inviting local residents to stand in a candlelight vigil to express their opposition to Bush’s move. Many of those, including Carol, had participated in similar vigils four years ago on the eve of U.S. action in Iraq.
"I don’t see what we are trying to achieve by sending more troops to Iraq,” Durkin said, adding that the country appeared to be experiencing a civil war.
Hundreds of similar vigils were held across the United States by organizations whose members are opposed to sending more troops into Iraq.
Among those at Thursday evening’s vigil was Joe Gross, who announced his plans to run for village mayor earlier this week. He said he was there because he was concerned about what is going on in Iraq.
