August 17, 2016

Press Release from District Attorney Hoovler. The victim is a former resident of Cornwall.

District Attorney Hoovler Announces Sentencing In Town of Newburgh Assault Case

Defendant Assaulted His Former Girlfriend in Her Town of Newburgh Home, Then Brought Her to His Ulster County Home

Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler announced that on Wednesday, August 17, 2016, Christopher Redenti, 47, of Highland, was sentenced in connection with the October 23, 2015, assault of his former girlfriend. Orange County Court Judge Nicholas DeRosa imposed on Redenti a sentence of twelve years in prison, to be followed by five years of post-release supervision, for his conviction of Assault in the First Degree, to which he pled guilty in June, 2016.

On October 23, 2015, the victim’s daughter returned home and found a large amount of blood on the outside of the front door, blood spattered in the home, and her mother missing. The daughter contacted the Town of Newburgh Police, and after their investigation focused on Redenti, the police spoke to Redenti on the phone. As Town of Newburgh Police spoke to him, encouraging him to surrender, Town of Lloyd Police drove to his home, where they took him into custody. At Redenti’s home, police found the victim, and called for medical assistance for her. Redenti had assaulted the victim in her home with a blunt object, thrown her over his shoulder, and driven her to his home while she was bleeding, and she remained there until police located them. The victim suffered injuries that required approximately twenty-five staples to her head; multiple stitches to her finger, which was cut open down to the tendons; and a fractured vertebra.

District Attorney Hoovler thanked the Town of Newburgh Police Department and the Town of Lloyd Police Department for their assistance in the investigation and prosecution of the case.

“Violence between intimate partners, including former partners, is intolerable,” said District Attorney Hoovler. “The victim here was lucky, thanks to the quick thinking of her daughter and police, and the defendant has been punished for his conduct. I have made it a priority to combat intimate partner violence, through initiatives designed to hold offenders accountable for their violent actions. Going forward, we hope to implement new strategies to stop the victimization of people by their partners.”

District Attorney Hoovler commended Senior Assistant District Attorney Kelle Grimmer for her handling of the prosecution of the case.

A criminal charge is merely an allegation that a defendant has committed a violation of the criminal law, and it is not evidence of guilt. All defendants are presumed innocent and entitled to a fair trial, during which it will be the State of New York’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
