Hudson Highlands Land Trust Works with Local Teachers and Students on Statewide Hudson River Study

On Tuesday, October 20, local public schools participated in a statewide testing of the Hudson River with the support of Hudson Highlands Land Trust River of Words educators. Now in its 13th year, “A Day in the Life of the Hudson River,” is coordinated by NYS DEC’s Hudson River Estuary Program and the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University to give students the opportunity to collect scientific information, like aquatic life, water chemistry, tides and weather, and create snapshots of the river at dozens of locations. The data is shared using the internet so students can better understand how their piece of the river fits into the larger Hudson estuary ecosystem.

HHLT River of Words (ROW) educators involved in the study include Pete Salmansohn who worked with the Haldane Middle School at Little Stony Point’s beach in Cold Spring. Lisa Mechaley and HHLT Stewardship Coordinator Matt Decker were stationed at Garrison Landing to help Garrison Union Free School’s 7th grade. At Cornwall Landing, Irene O’Garden guided 4th graders from Cornwall’s Willow Avenue Elementary School to create a verbal snapshot of the river using each of their five senses. The Highland Falls Intermediate School was participating in the program for the first time due to the coordination efforts of ROW educator Kali Bird. The school’s 7th grade students were located at Popolopen Creek, introducing a new site to river-long study.

“I was impressed with all the students I saw along the Hudson. They were enthusiastic about contributing to a greater study and engaged in the process,” said Kathy Hamel, HHLT’s Membership and Public Policy Coordinator.

River of Words is an international program co-founded by US Poet Laureate Robert Hass, and affiliated with the Library of Congress Center for the Book.

HHLT offers a free regional version of ROW to public schools in the Hudson Highlands, inspired by the international program, which focuses on the Hudson River, the lands that flank it and the streams that flow into it. The program trains teachers to use nature as a learning laboratory, conducts outdoor student workshops and ties nature-inspired, outdoor-based programming to the New York State Core Curriculum Standards. The Hudson Highlands Regional River of Words Program is made possible by the generous support of the Malcolm Gordon Charitable Fund, the RBC Blue Water Project and The Vidda Foundation.

The Hudson Highlands Land Trust is an accredited, non-profit, community-based land conservation organization dedicated to the protection of the natural resources, rural character, and scenic beauty of the Hudson Highlands. Through its educational outreach, the Land Trust strives to instill the importance of stewardship in the area’s youngest residents.
