County Executive joins local elected officials for re-opening of Forge Hill Bridge in New Windsor

Important commuter link had been closed since Hurricane Irene ravaged it in August of 2011

New Windsor, N.Y. – Orange County Executive Steven M. Neuhaus participated in a ceremonial groundbreaking ceremony with other local dignitaries on Thursday to commemorate the re-opening of the Forge Hill Bridge, which had been closed for almost four years after being severely damaged during Hurricane Irene in 2011.

Neuhaus was joined at the event by Senator Bill Larkin, Assemblyman James Skoufis, Town of New Windsor Supervisor George Green and Orange County Legislators Kevin Hines and Chris Eachus. A representative from Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney’s office also attended the ceremony. Maloney was instrumental in acquiring federal funding for the bridge.

Several of the speakers at the event, including Neuhaus, thanked Maloney for his important role in the project.

“It’s been a priority of mine since I took office to rebuild and upgrade Orange County’s infrastructure across the board,” Neuhaus said. “The rebuilding of the Forge Hill Bridge is an important part of this inititative. We know how important this bridge is to residents, so we pushed this project through as fast as we could. The bridge was finished a month and a half earlier than it was scheduled to be.”

The Forge Hill Bridge was closed in August of 2011 as a result of flood damage sustained during Hurricane Irene. Forge Hill Bridge’s reconstruction and extension began last August and transformed it from a two-span bridge to a three-span structure.
Servidone, of Castleton-on-Hudson, completed the $2.9 million Forge Hill Bridge project. It was funded from the following sources: 80 percent federal, 15 percent state, and five percent county. Forge Hill Bridge extends over Moodna Creek and is an important span for commuters traveling from State Route 94 to State Route 9W. In 2010, Forge Hill Bridge served over 2,000 vehicles per day.

“Nearly four years after Hurricanes Irene and Lee destroyed the Forge Hill Bridge, it is finally open for business,” said Congressman Maloney in a statement. “Since day one it has been my priority to fast track this long overdue project and I’m proud of the work performed by my office in partnership with federal, state, county and local officials to secure a federal investment of $2 million and finally get this job done.”

Senator Larkin thanked Maloney for his commitment to the project and Orange County officials for working together seamlessly during the process of rebuilding the Forge Hill Bridge.

“It has taken a long time, but I am glad the Forge Hill Bridge is completed and safe,” Larkin said. “I look forward to our constituents benefiting from this very significant infrastructure improvement.”
