General News: Taken Road Removal

June 18, 2015

Notes from the Town of Cornwall Board Meeting

Roadshow Recap, the Pilgrim Pipeline, Road Removal, and the Cornwall Commons Lawsuit.

By: Emma Friedrich

CORNWALL, NY - On Monday, June 8th, the Town of Cornwall held their monthly board meeting.

Maryanne O'Dell started the meeting off by recapping the "Antiques Roadshow" fundraising event, held on Saturday, May 30th, at Sands Ring Homestead. She stated the the event was "a huge success with over $5,000 raised toward the Homestead renovation." People came from all over Orange county to have their items appraised. She went on to say that the appraiser went above and beyond, starting appraisals at 12:30pm and continued until 6:45pm, when the event was only scheduled from 1-5pm. O'Dell and everyone at Sands Ring Homestead extends a huge Thank You to the Cornwall community and the Board for all their support in making the fundraiser a success. They have already went ahead and scheduled an Antiques Roadshow Fundraiser for next May.

The next major item on the meeting agenda was the Pilgrim Pipeline. This proposed pipeline would be built to bring oil and/or natural gas from Canada alongside the Hudson River, bringing it through Ulster and Orange counties. The Pilgrim Pipeline is an alternative to shipping Oil and Gas via tractor trailer. However, the pipeline proposal has been met with a lot of opposition, and for good reason. Ulster county has made it clear that they will not allow the pipeline to be built within county lines, while Orange county is still unsure. As of June 8th the Town of Cornwall voted against the construction of the Pilgrim Pipeline, in hopes the the rest of county will soon follow suit.

The Board has issued a public hearing on July 6th at 7pm, during the Town Work Session. This Public Hearing is to address the removal of Taken Road. Any questions or concerns about the road removal is welcomed at this meeting.

The last big agenda item this month was the decision of the Cornwall Commons Lawsuit. On June 1st, a judge dismissed the $38 million lawsuit. The developer of Cornwall Commons had accused the Town of deliberately delaying approval of the project in November of 2014. The Supreme Court Judge dismissed the case because there was no evidence that the steps the Board took did not serve a legitimate purpose. At the meeting, Supervisor Clark said, that the board was glad to see the lawsuit was dismissed.
