Two Scouts from Troop 118, Cornwall, NY Reach Eagle

An Eagle Scout Court of Honor was held on Sunday, May 31, 2015, at 2:00 pm at the Bethlehem Presbyterian Church in Cornwall to honor Cornwall Boy Scout Troop 118’s newest Eagle Scouts, Michael Miller and John Michael Zanin, Jr.

Assemblyman James Skoufis, Orange County Sheriff Carl DuBois, County Legislator Chris Eachus, Cornwall Supervisor Randy Clark, Hudson Valley Council Executive David Horton and Heritage District Chairperson Jackie Heubach were in attendance and made presentations to each of the Eagle Scouts.

Congratulatory messages were received from President and Mrs. Obama, Senator Charles Schumer, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney, Governor Andrew Cuomo, State Senator William Larkin and County Executive Steve Neuhaus.

For every 100 boys who join a Boy Scout troop:
Twelve will have their first contact with a church or synagogue.
Five will earn their religious emblem.
· Three will enter the clergy or a religious vocation.
Eighteen will develop hobbies that will last through their adult life.
Eight will enter a career that was learned through the merit badge system.
One will use his Scout skills to save the life of another.
Two will use their Scout skills to save their own life.
· Twenty-one will become adult Scouting volunteers.
· Five will become Eagle Scouts

To achieve the rank of Eagle, a Scout must earn a total of 21 merit badges. Additionally, while a Life Scout, the Eagle Candidate must plan, develop, and give leadership to others in a service project helpful to any organization outside of Scouting. The project must be approved by the Scoutmaster, the Troop’s Committee, and by the local District.

Michael is the son of the Marianne and Ross Miller of New Windsor. He is a junior at
Cornwall Central High School. Michael has previously served Troop 118 as an Assistant Patrol Leader, Patrol Leader and Assistant Senior Patrol Leader. He is currently a Junior Assistant Scoutmaster. For his Eagle Scout Service Project, Michael rebuilt E.P. Roe Memorial Park in Cornwall-on-Hudson.

John is the son of the Sharon and John Zanin of Cornwall-on-Hudson. He is also a junior at Cornwall Central High School. John has previously served Troop 118 as an Assistant Patrol Leader, Patrol Leader and Senior Patrol Leader. He is currently a Junior Assistant Scoutmaster. For his Eagle Scout Service Project, John created a patio and picnic tables off of the rear deck of the Cornwall American Legion.

Troop 118 is chartered by the Bethlehem Presbyterian Church in Cornwall. Since it’s rechartering in 1979, Troop 118 has had 63 Scouts ascend to the rank of Eagle.
