General News: Technology in Education Expo

May 08, 2015

By Emma Friedrich

CORNWALL, NY – On Wednesday, March 8th, Cornwall High School held their first Technology in Education Expo. Tina Kakascik, Cornwall District’s Director of Data and Technology, stated that, “this was a collaborative event born from conversations regarding out District’s technology use. We thought it would be a great idea to show parents, and members of the community, the types of technology our students use on a daily basis.”

Curious parents and kids crowded the halls within minutes. Tables were set up throughout the halls, library, and cafeteria. According to Kakascik, “All teachers were invited to showcase the technology they use in their classroom.” The tables were set up so kids could test out different computer programs, and I-Pad apps. There were more obvious programs, like Photoshop and Musical apps, but there were some programs that seemed surprised everyone.

All the tables were set up to demonstrate new technologies that the school now has and use on a daily basis. Programs like bridge building and graphic design, to teach Kids about Architecture and physics. The kids even drew their best friends with QR codes that will show parents what they wrote about their friends. This technology is giving children hands-on-experience with programs they may very well use in future job fields.

Among these tables was a small 3D Printer, where kids could fill out a form and have a 3D keychain, of their own design, made before their eyes. The kids also had the ability to go in from of a green screen and have themselves filmed in different scenes. There was even projector, with Google Maps displayed, that turned any smooth white surface, whether it be a table or wall, into a touchscreen.

According to Kakascik, “Feedback has been very positive and we are planning next year’s event. We believe a new Cornwall tradition had begun!” So if you missed the Expo this year, look for it during the next school year.
