General News: Common Core Forum at Munger Cottage

March 30, 2015

By Emma Friedrich

CORNWALL, NY –On Monday, March 23rd, in Munger Cottage Dr. Peg Luksik presented the Truth about Common Core to many concerned parent, grandparents, and teachers. With State Assessments coming up the biggest questions on everyone’s mind is “Are these tests actually benefiting my child?” and “Does my child have to take it?” Dr. Luksik answered all of these questions and more.

Dr. Luksik has over 35 years of teaching experience, from pre-schoolers to college, including special education. She also served as an advisor to Pres. Ronald Reagan’s Commission on the Family, and worked for the US Department of Education.

With common core, the state can change their “cut score” to what they deem fit. A “cut score” is the test score needed for a child to be deemed proficient. In 2009 77% of children were “Proficient”. However, in 2010, after NY State changed their “cut score” only 53% of children were “Proficient”. The same occurred in math. In 2009, 86% were “proficient” as opposed to 2010 when only 61% were “proficient”.

This forces teachers to teach for the test rather than enlighten students, because these tests are used to evaluate the teacher each year.

Sadly, with common core, as Luksik said, children at the top of the class are ignored because they are doing fine, but children at the bottom of the class are also being ignored because they won’t be able to reach proficient levels in time for testing. Teachers have to focus on the majority of children who are in middle ranks of the class because those children will carry the weight of Proficiency scores.

However, there are still teachers trying to teach students to enlighten them, rather than for the test. Since the tests are used to evaluate a teacher’s abilities each year, many are faced with losing their jobs.

Common Core is the Gates Foundation’s “10 year experiment” of Cradle to Career education. However, since Common Core has been instated, colleges throughout the country are finding that nearly 60% of college first years cannot read past a 7th grade reading level and have to take remedial classes.

So is common core benefiting your children? Well according to research it seems to be doing more harm than good. Does your child have to take the tests? Dr. Luksik said, “No, the law requires the school to give the test, the law does not require your child to take it.”
