Obituaries: Matthew T. Clancy

Matthew T. Clancy
Matthew T. Clancy
June 16, 2014

Matthew T. Clancy, 47, of Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, June 15. He was the son of the late Timothy and Rosalie (Dolly) Clancy of Cornwall.

He is survived by his wife of 19 years, Francine, daughter of Louis and JoAnn Volpe, also of Cornwall; by his two daughters, Jaclyn and Janine Clancy, and by his only sister, Kathleen Anthony (Charlie) of New Paltz, NY.

A beloved husband, devoted father and true friend, no call for help ever went unanswered. Matt was always there to help friends and strangers alike. Matt loved doting on his two daughters and delighted in being their father. He demonstrated each day to them what it is to be loved and set an amazing example of how to live. His girls are heartbroken and saddened to lose such a magnificent father. A more hardworking, strong, loving and gentle man you will not find. He loved to be surrounded by friends and was always the life of any party.

He was a 15 year employee of the Village of Cornwall-on-Hudson and provided 29 years of dedicated service to Storm King Engine Co. #2 beginning on February 6, 1985. Elected Chief in 2001, other roles included Deputy Chief, Assistant Chief, Captain, Lieutenant, Vice President (2014), President (1989, 2013) and Trustee. Matt was the current President of the Storm King Volunteer and Exempt Fireman’s Association, past President of the Orange County Volunteers Fireman’s Association Inc., an Honor Member of Highland Engine Co. #1 and an Honorary Member of Mountainville Engine Co. No #3.

Matt was a member of Ancient Order of Hibernians and of the Newburgh Elks’ Club. He was an avid softball player, playing multiple games on any given day. In 1999, Matt founded the Bruce Armitage Memorial Softball Tournament in honor of his good friend and brother firefighter. Proceeds from this tournament, now in its 16th year, provide educational funds for Bruce’s children and also award two annual Athletic Scholarships to graduating seniors of Cornwall Central High School.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Matt’s memory to: Storm King Fire Engine Co #2 PO Box 333 Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY 12520-0333 and Hospice of Orange & Sullivan Counties Inc. 800 Stony Brook Court Newburgh, NY 12550.

Visitation will be held at Brooks Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Ave, Newburgh, NY on Wednesday, June 18 from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Funeral Mass at Church of St. Francis of Assisi, 145 Benkard Ave, Newburgh on Thursday, June 19th at 10:00 am.
