Obituaries: Eileen Jean Sullivan

Eileen Jean Sullivan
(January 11, 1919 - April 25, 2014)

Eileen Jean Sullivan passed away peacefully and naturally on Friday, April 25, 2014 at St. Cabrini’s Eldercare, Dobbs Ferry, NY. Born as Eileen Elizabeth Walsh on January 11, 1919 in Rockaway Beach, NY, she lived in Manhattan with her parents, Charles and Elizabeth Kelly Walsh. As a young child she went to Good Council Academy and spent her "formative" years attending the Catholic Boarding School and returning to NYC for the summers. She graduated early from Good Council College, White Plains, NY with the class of 1938. Eileen’s yearbook caption read “Whose little body lodged a mighty mind”. Graduating at 19 years old, Eileen became a legal secretary at a Manhattan law firm where she met her husband, William Ambrose Sullivan ,Jr., an attorney who later was vice president of Ruppert Knickerbocker Brewery, Bronx, NY. They married in 1941. Eileen was a mother of six children, and raised the family in Westchester Co. in the towns of Mamaroneck and Rye. Eileen was also a substitute teacher at Resurrection Grammar School in Rye, and was a dedicated volunteer at the Good Council Alumnae Association where she wrote the alumni newspaper. With her children grown up and out of the house, Eileen and William retired to Cornwall NY in 1977 where she continued volunteering for REAL, an organization supporting the rights of special needs children, and also at St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital.

Survivors include her children: Kathleen, Betsy, Neil and Clare Sullivan; grandchildren: Brian and Liam Sullivan, Regan Yankowski, Erin and Sara Sullivan, DDS; and great-grandchildren: Patrick and Jane Sullivan, Kayla and Jake Yankowski, Maggie, Will, Griffin and Lilly Sullivan. She was predeceased by her husband William A. Sullivan, Jr. and sons Brian Edward Sullivan and William A. Sullivan, III.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, May 4, from 2-5pm at James F. Lulves Funeral Home, 9 Avenue A, Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, May 5 at 10am at St. Thomas of Canterbury Church, 340 Hudson St., Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY. Inurnment will follow in St. Thomas Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Eileen’s memory may be sent to the Sisters of Devine Compassion, Good Council Convent, 52 N Broadway, White Plains, NY 10603 (914 949 2950).
