Obituaries: Carmen Donato

 Carmen Donato, age 84, of Cornwall, NY, a lifelong area resident died Monday, April 21, 2014 at home in Cornwall. Carmen was born July 16, 1929 at his home in Newburgh, NY. He is the son of the late Louis and the late Stella (Jodakis) Donato.

Carmen was a United States Army Veteran serving during the Korean Conflict. He worked for Local #5 Bricklayers and Plasterers Union. He played semi pro baseball as a left hand pitcher in the southern states and Cuba. He was a life member of Black Rock Fish & Game Club, a member of Bethlehem Rod & Gun Club, member of the Mid Hudson Wood Carvers Guild. He loved to bowl, play pool, baseball and teach dancing. As a Cornish plasterer Carmen worked in many local churches and historical buildings.

Carmen is survived by his loving wife, Pamela Merritt Donato at home; his son, Chris Donato and his wife, Julie of Cornwall; his daughter, Kelly Galeas at home; his sister, Mary Cappelli of New Windsor; sister in law, Helen Merritt, and brother in law, Mr. Thurl Merritt of Newburgh; three grandchildren, Michael Donato, Carina Donato and Nicolas Galeas; and several nieces and nephews. Carmen was a special Uncle "T.T."" to J.D. and Shane Merritt and several cousins.

He was predeceased by his brother, Allen Donato and brothers in law, Roger Merritt and Humbert Cappelli.

FAMILY STATEMENT: "Carmen and Pam married in 1979 after Chris and Kelly begged him to pop "the question" and he became the best husband and father. A man of his generation, quiet, patient beyond belief, and hard worker, always trying to instill those traits quietly to anyone he loved. He gave his heart and soul to his family and that is all anyone could ask. After retiring he and Pam were sextons of Union Church for many years. They also delivered food, furniture and other items to the needy in the Newburgh area through Union Church during those years."

Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 24th from 4 to 8 p.m. at the DiDonato Funeral Home, 1290 Route 9W, Marlboro.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 25th at 11 a.m. at the Union Presbyterian Church, 44 Balmville Road, Newburgh with the Reverend Mason officiating. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Middle Hope.
