Obituaries: Lena Cavallo

 'Nanny' to her seven grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren, Lena Cavallo passed this life at 97 years of age from the Kaplan Hospice in Newburgh, NY on January 30, 2014. She was the daughter of the late Joseph and Vittoria DePaolo and was raised with her sister Catherine and brother Gerard in The Bronx and Manhattan. She was the widow of Joseph Cavallo. They raised a family in The Bronx.

She was the mother of Lucille Costanzo (Ralph) and Anthony Cavallo (Betty) of Cornwall. She was the grandmother of LeeAnn Sargeant (Alan), Ronald Costanzo (Danielle), Joseph Cavallo (Kathi), Steven Costanzo (Carla), Alicia Hughes (Ted), Tony Cavallo (Kara), and Amy Barkdoll (Clint). She was the great grandmother of Meghan Hughes, Matthew Cavallo, Kevin Hughes, Joseph & Nicholas Cavallo, Nicholas Costanzo, Natalia & Juliana Costanzo, William Barkdoll, Alana Lee Sargeant, Alexander Costanzo, Luke Barkdoll, Libby & Mia Costanzo. She last resided with her daughter and son-in-law in Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY.

Lena enjoyed her time as wife and mother specializing in grand holiday meals for her extended family. She worked over the years as a medical office aide, in several clerical positions in retail, and ultimately in the employ of, and retiring from the Department of Motor Vehicles. She stayed active following retirement and widowhood by volunteering in several organizations involved with the care of children and the aged. She held off her own aging by walking almost everywhere. She reluctantly surrendered some independence following injury from a fall by relocating to live with her daughter in Orange County. She became active at the Cornwall Senior Citizens Center ,where she enjoyed card games and bingo. She enjoyed trips to casinos with new friends. She enjoyed immensely her travels to the beach with grandson Ronald and family to their home in Naples, Fla. Mostly, she found pleasure in the company of her family and dear friends, especially Josephine Gambardella.

Funeral services will commence at the Quigley Bros. Funeral Home 337 Hudson St. in Cornwall-on-Hudson. Visitors will be received on Saturday, Feb 1, 2014 between 5PM & 8PM and again on Sunday, Feb 2, 2014 between 1PM & 5PM. A funeral mass will be held on Monday, Feb 3, 2014 (10AM) at St Thomas of Canterbury Church in Cornwall-on-Hudson. Burial to follow in St. Raymond’s Cemetery- Bronx NY
