Obituaries: Christina Anna Meyer Cowton

January 27, 2014

On January 24, 2014, our Mom, Christina Anna Meyer Cowton, took her last life journey from her home on Angola Road to be with those who have already taken that journey. She will be greeted by the open arms of her father, Johann A. and her mother, Emma Marie Schroeder Meyer, her husband of 55 years Stanley Franklin Cowton and her son Thomas J. Cowton.

She began this life in Jersey City, NJ on the 11th of June in 1926. She took up residence in Cornwall, NY in the late 40’s, where she met the love of her life Stanley F. Cowton at a riding stable. They were married on December 3rd, 1949 and had seven children: Joanne (Jim) Schoonmaker, Roberta (Keith) Lewis, Thomas (who left us in 1972), Stanley, Jr. (Helen), Lorraine, Linda and Jeffrey (Jill). She also has six grandchildren: Kyle, Brett, Devon and Emmary Lewis, and Craig and Lesley Cowton. Also surviving Mom is her beloved cat, Mac. In addition to this immediate family, there are several surviving cousins, a very special “adopted daughter” Brenda Maurer and her family, and a very large extended family at The Center for Discovery.

Mom was known to some people as Chris (her colleagues) and to some as Anne (mostly relatives). Besides raising her children, she was also a graduate of St. Luke’s School of Nursing and was employed in various departments of the Cornwall Hospital, retiring with 40 years of service. She loved organizing family gatherings, cooking, shopping and traveling, especially to Germany and England to visit relatives, and also to Lancaster, PA. She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Monroe.

Her constant companion for the last nine years has been her daughter Lorraine, and during this last year of her life Lorraine has been tireless in her devotion and care. In addition to being grateful to Lorraine for allowing Mom this last wish, we are also grateful to the staff of Elant at Fishkill for enabling Mom to return to her home, to Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties, especially Doreen and Yasmin, Dr. Anne Mullin, Joan and Jim Conley, Cynthia Couser and Matthew Agazzi for their loving care.

Calling hours will be held on Monday, January 27, 2014 from 3-5pm at James F. Lulves Funeral Home, 9 Avenue A, Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY. A Memorial Service and Celebration of Life will be held at a date to be announced in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Mom’s memory may be made to Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties, 800 Stony Brook Ct., Newburgh, NY or to The Center for Discovery, PO Box 840, Harris, NY 12742.

Arrangements are under the direction of James F. Lulves Funeral Home (845) 534-2550. For directions or to send condolences, please visit www.lulvesfuneralhome.com
