Obituaries: Kathleen Dunphy

 Kathleen Dunphy, 87 yrs of Cornwall NY passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on January 18, 2014. at St. Lukes Cornwall Hospital- Newburgh NY . Kathleen was born May 29, 1926 in Carrick-on-Suir , County Tipperary, Ireland to John O’Sullivan and Bridget Walsh O’Sullivan. Kathleen was owner and operator of The maplehurst Inn in Cornwall NY.

She is survived by her children, Mary Clifford-New Windsor NY, John Dunphy and his wife Bonnie- Town of Newburgh, Kathy Dunphy Smith and husband Gary-Cape Coral FL, and Noreen Dunphy Marino- New Windsor NY.

She is survived by her sister Noreen O’Mahoney, brother “Willie” O;Sullivan both of Ireland .

Granchildren: John Pierce, Jeffrey Clifford, Jason Smith, Sharon Lynn, Christina Bandura, Anthony Smith , Brad Clifford, , Richard Marino, Dominica Marino, Several nieces, nephews and great grandchildren. She also survived by her long time companion Frank Jones who worked side by side with her in later years.

Kathleen was predeceased by her loving husband Richard and her parents and brother Paddy O’Sullivan.

Kathleen emigrated to United States many years ago at the age of 19 and immediately worked to become a citizen. She often spoke of the long boat ride from Ireland to New York . After arriving in the US she worked several jobs, eventually going to Anchorage Alaska where she married her long time love Richard. They travelled the world in the US Air Force and raised 4 children. After retirement , they settled in Cornwall and purchased the Maplehurst Inn. Together they operated the inn for many years and she continued after his death in 1985.

Kathleen was a strong independent woman who had a work ethic that could not be matched, often taking on responsibilities that others would not. She was a devoted mother and grandmother who worked tirelessly to assure that her family were well taken care of.

She will be missed by her family and all the residents of the Inn.


VISITATION: 6-8 PM on Monday 1/20/14 at QUIGLEY BROS.FUNERAL HOME ,337 HUDSON ST, CORNWALL-ON-HUDSON NY 12520

Mass will be 10:30 AM on Tuesday 1/21/14 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Union & 9W, New Windsor NY. Burial will follow in St. Thomas Cemetery- Cornwall NY.
