Emily Flayter, a longtime Cornwall resident, entered into eternal rest on Monday, November 25, 2013, at St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh. She was 102 years young. The daughter of the late John and Anna Baker, Emily was born on July 2, 1911 in Renssalaer, NY. She married Martin Flayter in 1931 in Albany, NY, who predeceased her in August of 1989.
Emily was employed for many years in the Cornwall School District and was appointed secretary of the High School Guidance Department when the building opened in 1958. It was there she was able to express her loving and caring manner to the many students she became associated with. She truly loved her job. She was one of six original members of The Cornwall Hospital Thrift Shop, was a long standing member of The Cornwall Methodist Church and the order of The Eastern Star.
Emily is survived by her loving daughters: Jacqueline and her husband, Robert Funck of Cornwall, NY and Marlyn and her husband, Richard Dickinson of Waynesville, NC; her grandchildren: Lori and her husband, Kevin Hoarty, Jodi Andrews, Heidi and husband, Peter Cook, Wendy and her husband, John Harrigan and Robyn and her husband, Chuck Riordan; her great-grandchildren: Molly, Connor and Emma Hoarty; Quinn Andrews; Kenny and Chloe Cook; Michael Harrigan and Emily Riordan.
Her family will always remember her joyful spirit and zest for life. She loved playing cards, reading, computer games and mostly being around people. Emily's grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the center of her world. She was so proud of their every accomplishment and relished time with them all. She made a lasting impression on everyone she met, with a wink and a smile that would warm your heart.
Family and friends are invited to gather on Friday, November 29th, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Quigley Bros. Funeral Home, 337 Hudson St., Cornwall, NY. Burial will be private in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Newburgh, NY. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, November 30th at 12 noon at the Methodist Church, 196 Main St., Cornwall, NY, with Pastor Robert Milsom of Greenville, NY officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Emily may be made to the Cornwall United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 196 Main St., Cornwall, NY 12518.
