Raymond J. McGowan, a long-time Cornwall, NY resident, died on November 14, 2013
in Ocala, Fl.
Mr. McGowan was a member of America's Greatest Generation as a WW II
Veteran. A US Navy Quartermaster First Class, he served in the Asiatic and North Atlantic theaters and received the Philippines Presidential Unit Citation.
After the war, he returned to Cornwall to first join, then run Raymond J. McGowan and Sons, a commercial contract painting company in the Mid-Hudson Valley.
He was a long-time member of Storm King Golf Club, serving as
president and winning the men's club championship several times. He
and his wife received a life-time membership from the Club in 2008.
Mr. McGowan was also an active member of the Cornwall Lions Club,
serving in numerous officer positions.
He is survived by his wife, Carol (Ocala, FL), son Tim (Darien, CT),
daughter-in-law Louise (Darien, CT), grandson Andrew, Ensign USN
(Albany, NY), granddaughter Sarah (NY, NY), sister Mary (Ft. Collins,
Co.,) brother William (Ocala, FL), and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, November 26 at 11am at the Orange Co. Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Goshen, NY.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions may be sent to Columbia University Zuckerman Institute, attention Meghan Fay, 622 West 113th Street, MC 4520, NY, NY 10025.
