Obituaries: Nancy Elizabeth Kennedy

November 13, 2013

Nancy Elizabeth Kennedy, beloved wife of Joseph Kennedy, passed away unexpectedly, resting in her favorite chair at home on Monday, November 11, 2013, as Joe did the dishes in the next room, as she had requested. She was a vivacious and active 87.

A mother of five and grandmother of eight, Nancy died the day after funeral services for her only sister, Myra Zwart. That day, November 10, was also the 57th anniversary of her marriage to the love of her life. Together, Nancy and Joe built and kept the family home at the corner of Jackson Avenue and Orrs Mills Road overlooking the iconic Moodna Trestle.

Nancy was known for her love of family and her love of work. For the past 38 years, she worked as a toll collector for the New York State Thruway Authority, mainly at the Woodbury Toll Plaza. She was named Toll Collector of the Year many times due to her pleasant demeanor and unflagging customer service. Even after retiring in 2010 at age 84, she continued to collect tolls part time and worked her last shift on Friday, November 8, just three days before she died.

She also enjoyed her many shopping trips to the Palisades Mall with her youngest daughter and best friend, Lori Kennedy, and youngest grandchild, 9-year-old Hailey Faurot. There, the three of them would make a point of visiting the Cheesecake Factory for grandma’s favorite: crab cakes.

Nancy was a frequent volunteer for the Cornwall Hospital Auxiliary, for the Blooming Grove Humane Society and for Thursday Night Bingo at St. Thomas of Canterbury Church. She also enjoyed traveling to such locations as Portugal, Ireland, and Aruba, as well as to National Parks Yosemite and Yellowstone. On occasion, she would try her luck, with some success, at Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun casinos, most often as part of a church group.

Nancy was a devoted parishioner at St. Thomas of Canterbury Church in Cornwall-on-Hudson for more than 40 years. After church, almost without fail, she and Joe hosted Sunday dinners attended by whichever of her children and grandchildren were nearby.

Nancy was the daughter of Elizabeth “Bessie” Smith Henry and Joseph Henry. She was raised in the 1765 family farmhouse on Route 94 in New Windsor and attended the one-room schoolhouse at Bethlehem (New Windsor), where she carried a 99 average in spelling. She graduated from Cornwall High School and then went to work as a telephone operator at what was then Bell Telephone, in Newburgh.
In addition to her sister, she was predeceased by her brother, Clemence J. Henry.

Nancy leaves behind her husband and her children and their families Sharon Kennedy Satkowski and Paul Satkowski of Salisbury Mills; Barbara Kennedy Gref and Kevin Gref of Jeffersonville; JoAnn Kennedy Curry of New Windsor; Michael Kennedy of New Windsor; Lori Kennedy Faurot and David Faurot of Salisbury Mills; beloved grandchildren Justin Satkowski and his fiancé Regina Ammirati; Jonathan Satkowski and his girlfriend Heather Schreiner; Emily, Anna and Joseph Gref; Sean and Shannon Curry; and Hailey Faurot. She also leaves behind an extended family, including sisters-in-law Beth Henry and Catherine Kennedy, Roberta Kennedy, brother- and sister-in-law Martin Kennedy and Louise Kennedy plus her many nieces and nephews, all of whom were very dear to her.

Nancy had a gentle soul, kind heart and generous spirit and will be missed by all who knew her.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on 10 AM Thursday 11/14/13 St. Thomas of Canterbury Church , 340 Hudson St. Cornwall-On-Hudson NY 12520 . Burial to follow in Orange County Veteran ‘s Cemetery – Goshen NY.

Arrangements were made by Kevin Quigley of Quigley Bros Funeral Home in Cornwall.
